Windows Server 2019 ADFS features Center Branded UX out of the box!

In Windows Server 2016 ADFS you could add “Center Branded UX” by creating a new theme based on the files and instructions found at https://github.com/Microsoft/adfsWebCustomization/tree/master/centeredUi.
I created a blogpost about that, which you can find here: ADFS New sign-in experience added

How does this work in the new Windows Server 2019 ADFS role?

After adding the ADFS role and properly configuring it, navigate to https://<url for your adfs server>/adfs/ls/idpinitiatedsignon:
01 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
This error is normal. As in Windows Server 2016 ADFS, the IdPInitiatedSignOn is disabled by default.

Open an elevated PowerShell prompt:

Set-AdfsProperties -EnableIdPInitiatedSignonPage $true

02 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
Reloading the page after a couple of minutes:
03 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
All good.

Notice the theme that is used by ADFS. It’s the default theme we all know so well, and which was available since forever, even though it says Copyright 2018.

But fret not, as the slick new login experience known as “Centered UI”, or “Center Branded”, or “Azure AD UX” or, as I like to call it “Center Branded UX”, is offered by Windows Server 2019 ADFS out of the box, it’s just not active yet.

In an elevated PowerShell prompt:

Get-AdfsWebConfig

04 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
So the Default theme is active at the moment.

What themes ship with Windows Server 2019?

In an elevated PowerShell prompt:

Get-AdfsWebTheme | Select Name

05 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
Besides the Default theme there’s an extra theme out of the box!

Let’s create a custom theme based on that one and set it active.

In an elevated PowerShell prompt:

New-AdfsWebTheme -Name ITWLAB -SourceName DefaultAdfs2019

Set-AdfsWebConfig -ActiveThemeName ITWLAB

06 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
Reload the page:
07 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
Voila! “Center Branded UX” out of the box!

Signing in:
08 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
And if you enable the update password portal in the ADFS Management console and restart the ADFS service on all farm members:
09 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes
You can browse to the update password portal (/adfs/portal/updatepassword):
10 Windows 2019 ADFS Webthemes

In my free time (hah! as if there is any) I used to hunt achievements and gamerscore on anything Xbox Live enabled (Windows Mobile, Windows 8, Windows 10, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). Recently I picked up my Lego addiction again.
